We are very proud to of had this opportunity in working on the new UNMC Buffet Cancer Center. Working in coalition with The Dale Chihuly Team, HDR Architects, Kiewit Building Group, and Smith Bourne and Associates, this meditation and sanctuary cone is the center piece to Mr. Dale Chihuly’ s breath taking glass exhibit.
This 22’ diameter cone was a very challenging project, with hundreds of individual pieces of white oak hardwood cladding the exterior. Each piece was triangular shaped and pre-finished, then hand applied to wrap the angular shape of the cone. In addition, the interior boasts a white oak wainscot interior with floating oak benches and upholstered cushions and backrests. The white oak is gray washed with a dull water born finish to represent natural wood. The hand railing is bent layers of walnut hardwood suspended with custom bronze brackets. Custom forged bronze complimented the top and bottom edge of the white oak, and corners of the entrance.
